Starwood’s
Brogan retiring

Longtime Hawaii hotel executive John C. Brogan, whose nearly 50 year-career took him from a front desk job to head of a national hotel chain, is retiring Oct. 1.

Brogan, 66, is Hawaii president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts and spent nearly four decades with Sheraton Hotels. In 1998, ITT Sheraton Corp. merged with Starwood. "After nearly 50 wonderful years in the hotel industry, 39 years with Sheraton, it's time to enjoy other interests," Brogan said.

A native of Lansing, Mich., Brogan began his career after high school working at the front desk of a Michigan hotel. He joined Sheraton's Hawaii operations in 1960 as rooms manager, which lead to a numerous other management positions here and on the mainland.

From 1976-1981 he was president of Sheraton's North America division in Boston. In 1997, he was named president of Sheraton's Hawaii operations. Brogan is retiring in Hawaii with his wife, Mary Lou.
