A&B Alexander & Baldwin Inc. has named a 27-year member of the board as its new chairman.

Charles M. Stockholm, a mainland banking executive, yesterday was named to replace R.J. Pfeiffer, who came out of retirement last year to temporarily head the board after John Couch, former chairman and chief executive, took a medical leave to undergo treatment for liver cancer. After a successful liver transplant, Couch subsequently announced his retirement effective Sept. 30.

Stockholm, 66, has been a board member since 1972. He currently is managing director of Trust Co. of the West, responsible for international marketing and client relations.

Honolulu-based A&B said Stockholm also was named chairman of subsidiaries Matson Navigation Co. and A&B-Hawaii Inc.

"We are indeed fortunate to have Mr. Stockholm, with his extensive business background and knowledge of the corporation and its subsidiaries, available and willing to take on these positions," said Pfeiffer, who was named chairman emeritus.

Stockholm has a long career in the banking business, including tenures as chairman of Citibank International and senior executive vice president of Crocker National Bank. He is a graduate of Stanford University and received a graduate degree from the American Graduate School of International Management.

Stockholm is a trustee of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and is on other boards of nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area.

He has a second home in Maui.
