Wide receivers Attrice Brooks and Jamal Garland weren't allowed to practice with the team this morning because their transcripts from their respective junior colleges have yet to arrive. Brooks,
Garland sit outJones was frustrated by the turn of events because neither player can be a part of the team until their grades are verified.
It was also announced that junior college recruit Tony Vaughn is an academic casualty. At this point, he is the only Rainbow player who failed to make the grade.
"We're hoping Attrice and Jamal can resume practicing soon," Jones said. "They told us we needed both players' sealed transcripts and that a fax wouldn't do. It's like having to get a court order."
Brooks and Garland are expected to contribute right away. Brooks played his junior college ball at San Francisco City College. Garland attended Grossmont (Calif.) College as did Vaughn.
"Right now, it appears all our veteran guys are in camp," Jones said. "We need to get everybody in and on the same page as quickly as possible."
With Garland and Brooks sidelined, Jones moved Scott Sims from the H receiver to the Z. He will back up both positions.
Tickets going fast
Aloha Stadium officials said they sold approximately 4,000 individual tickets yesterday for the USC game. It was the first time football tickets could be bought by the general public.Fans interested in buying individual game tickets can go to Aloha Stadium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Final season-ticket sales aren't in yet, but it's believed about 23,000 packages were sold, a 15 percent increase over last year.
Injury update
Outside linebacker Bo Espinoza may be back in full pads as early as tomorrow, but is still doubtful for the season opener with USC because of a nasty hamstring pull. At this point, he is the only player on the two-deep chart with a serious injury."We've stayed pretty healthy throughout fall camp, which is good," Jones said. "One reason we've had limited contact is to keep our best guys on the football field."
Defensive lineman Tony Tuioti returned to practice this morning. He was held out of fall camp because of his back. This past spring, Tuioti underwent surgery to repair a ruptured disc in his lower back.
New emblem on pants
Say goodbye to the old Rainbow emblem and hello to the Warrior. Not only will he be on the helmet, but on the pants as well.Assistant equipment manager Al Ginoza said today the warrior will be just above the thigh pad.
Jones decided to bring back the warrior that was first introduced by former head coach Larry Price. The rainbow stripes will be on the pants, but the emblem has been removed from the uniform.
Quarterbacks on move
About the only sure thing for the six signal callers is Dan Robinson is the starter. Just how the others shake out will be determined over the next week or so.Jones said freshman Mike Harrison will continue to get repetitions with the No. 2 unit, but stopped short of saying the job was now his to lose.
Redshirt Kevin Gilbride appears to have taken over scout team duties. He will give the Rainbows' No. 1 defense a good look under center.
If Harrison falters, look for senior Josh Skinner to be called on first should Robinson go down. Skinner is better suited for the option, but he has the most game experience of the five Robinson understudies.
