Hawaii advances
to final of Babe Ruth
World Series

Kasey Ko hit a game-winning home run in the sixth and final inning yesterday to lead Hawaii past Kennewick, Wash., 3-2, yesterday during the Babe Ruth World Series at Matton, Ill.

Landon Nakata pitched a six-inning complete game and hit two doubles. Ko went 2-for-3, including two RBIs.

Hawaii, 4-1, plays Danbury (Conn.) today in the championship game. Hawaii will have to win two games to win the title; undefeated Danbury only needs one victory.

Abubo in quarterfinals

Hawaii's Megan Abubo reached the quarterfinals of the T&C Lacanau Pro surf meet by winning her third-round heat yesterday at Lacanau, France.

Abubo's score of 14.3 in the heat topped Australia's Pauline Menczer (11.35) and Trudy Todd (6.3).

In the men's competition, Californian Shea Lopez eliminated Hawaii's Shane Dorian in the fourth round, getting the better of the No. 3-ranked surfer, 20.5-17.5, in excellent 5-foot waves.

Wong, Heidger win

Hawaii's Kevin Wong and teammate Rob Heidger, won a 15-7 decision in 37 minutes from Ze'Marco de Melo and Ricardo Santos yesterday during the fourth day of competition in the Spanish Open beach volleyball tournament at Tenerife, Canary Islands.

Wong and Heidger challenge top-seeded Emanuel Scheffer and Jose Loiola of Brazil today.

NCAA tennis All-American

Marcie Kam, from Waipahu, was named to the NCAA Division III scholar-athlete All-American team.

Kam attends Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Quarterback Club

University of Hawaii assistant football coaches Greg McMackin and Vantz Singletary, Wahine basketball coach Vince Goo and Kahuku football coach Siuvaki Livai will be the guest speakers at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Restaurant, at noon.

NBA stars on Maui

Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Shawn Kemp, Detlef Schrempf, Vin Baker and others will participate in the Who's Got Game Challenge, Aug. 28 on Maui.

Expected to attend the event at the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa, are NBA legends Hal Greer, Sam Jones, Bill Walton and Rick Barry.

There will be a limited autograph session from noon to 2 p.m.

Okada in U.S. Open

Maui's Jean Okada earned a singles qualification wild-card berth in the upcoming U.S. Open Championships at the National Tennis Center in New York.

Okada, ranked No. 171 in doubles and No. 252 in singles, will play her first-round match either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Top finishers in the qualification tournament will gain spots in the main draw, to begin Aug. 30.

Hapuna Roundup

The fourth annual Hapuna Roundup Invitational Pro-Am will be held Sept. 4-5 at the Hapuna Golf Course.

Four-member teams comprised of one professional and three amateurs will compete for individual and team prizes. Top professionals will compete for a purse of $12,000. Amateurs will play for over $12,000 in prizes.

Kapalua Open

The 19th annual Wilson Kapalua Open returns to Kapalua's Tennis Garden and Village Tennis Center on Maui, Sept. 3-6.

This USTA-sanctioned event features a $10,000 purse. Entry fee is $50 per player, and deadline is Aug. 25. For information, call (808) 669-5677.
