Lanai wedding
draws the stars

Mug shot The stars were out at Lanai when talent agent Adam Venit and Trina Young tied the knot Aug 7. Adam Sandler, David Spade, Lisa Kudrow, Peter Strauss and Kristy Swanson were among the 60 friends who flew in for the Lodge at Koele wedding . Sandler cracked up kids by making absurdly funny faces on the golf course as he signed autographs ... The Honolulu Symphony's Pops season gets off to a fine start Sept. 3 and 4 with Kenny Rogers at the Concert Hall. Melveen Leed, always entertaining, is the supporting act and Matt Catingub is the conductor. Matt and his hot swing band close Aug. 29 at Hilton's Tropics nightspot ...

'Bowfinger' is a laughfest

"Bowfinger," starring Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin is pure nonsense but it is hilarious. Murphy has a double role and he is a laugh riot in both parts. He portrays Hollywood's hottest action star, Kit Ramsey, and Ramsey's slow-thinking, modest brother, Jiff. Martin is a down-and-out producer, Bobby Bowfinger, who wants Ramsey to star in his film. The stars are superb. The supporting cast also adds to the hilarity. It is led by the marvelous Christine Baranski, who plays a would-be mature leading lady and young and sexy Heather Graham, an aspiring actress who will sleep with anyone who says he can help make her a star. The laughs are so good I'm going to see "Bowfinger" again ...

The September issue of Time-Warner's "Teen People" magazine spotlights Kamehameha Secondary School as the "Cool School of the Month." Among the students quoted or pictured in the national publication are: Kelena Hookano, Vita Awai, Alexandra Coelho, Erin Samura, Kapua Medeiros, Aureana Tseu, Michelle Mueller, David Kapololu, Brenden Nakata, Aja LeGros and teacher Sarah Keahi ...

Waikiki prince Hotel manager Ted McAneeley will be among former Edmonton oilers hockey players, fans and Canadian dignitaries at a dinner honoring hockey sensation Wayne Gretzky Wednesday in Edmonton. "The Great Gretzky" recently retired as a player. When Ted retired from the Oilers in the late 1970s, a young Gretzky joined the team. Gretzky wore jersey No. 99. Hawaii Prince Hotels is donating its 99 holes of golf package for the dinner's silent auction. Ted said 2,500 people are expected to attend ...

North Shore artist Karen Scata opened an exhibition of her "People and Places" exhibit at Marc Cohen's downtown Cafe Che pasta Monday. Among the guests was Callanetics Studios' Lu Ann Gordon, who was beaming. Her son, Mike, 18, won the Hawaiian Noseriding Classic long board pro division surfing competition Sunday, good for $1,000 ...

Natasha gets the call

Isle singer Natasha Tabandara has been invited to join the Broadway ensemble cast of "Miss Saigon" by executive producer Peter lawrence. Her first rehearsal is Sept. 2 and her debut on the Great White Way is Sept. 13. Natasha's aunt is Nancy Daniels of Outrigger Hotels P.R. Department. The touring company of "Miss Saigon" opens here Oct. 7 ... Swiss Inn will be closed Sept. 6-Oct. 7 so owners Martin and Jeanie Wyss can make a trip to Switzerland, their first in five years. Chef Martin is from Switzerland ... Boxing official and former UH boxing coach Herb Minn is home after conducting a boxing clinic in Kurashiki, Japan ...
