‘Sockless June’
dresses up

FANS of the UH Rainbow Warrior football team this year are hoping to see lots of rocks and socks on the field. But the rocks are in their heads if they're expecting to see socks on new UH coach June Jones. Mug shotIf Joe Jackson was "Shoeless Joe," then Jones is surely "Sockless June." Now there are exceptions to the rule. Jones appeared at the UH Summer commencement, and to the surprise of nearly everyone who knows him, he wore socks. He mentioned to UH President Ken Mortimer that it was probably the first time he'd worn socks since his wedding day. Funny, that's the one time you'd think they'd be extraneous ...

DON'T be alarmed -- or sound the alarm -- if you see a big fire in Manoa Valley next week. Plans call for a giant pep rally on the Bachman Hall lawn from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 3 with a big blaze to be set across University Avenue on the UH Lab School lawn. It's one of the events slated to highlight the first two weeks of the school year under the banner "Pride '99." Organizers are expecting a big crowd to show up, eat, enjoy the music (Imua, Natural Vibes and others) and then head down to the Stan Sheriff Center for that night's UH Wahine volleyball game vs. Minnesota in the first night of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. These media conscious organizers plan to set the bonfire about 7 p.m. with remote cameras capturing the event and showing it on the arena's scoreboard video screens around the scheduled first serve. That should make for a roar loud enough to send the Golden Gophers underground ...

Lush event

WE'RE not talking any old Lush here, mind you. We're talking about August Busch Jr.'s favorite: Bud Lush. He's the guy promoting the Duke Kahanamoku Paddle Board Race and Sports Festival at the Elks Club Sunday. Members of the "Baywatch Hawaii" cast will be there, and Lush (e-mail address: alush@hula. net) says $15 will get you in to watch the races, have lunch, be eligible for door prizes and "rub shoulders with the 'Baywatch' cast." I'd be a little careful about all that rubbing, but the event is for a good cause, the junior lifeguard program. For tickets call 923-5722. If a Lush answers, don't hang up ...

WHEN Carelli's on the Beach opened in Wailea eight years ago, the thought was that it may well become a haven for celebrities. In on that opening night was the "Great One," Wayne Gretzky. For people who only know ice as an addition to Scotch, he's the best hockey player who ever lived. Well, Gretzky was back again at Carelli's the other night, and who else was in but another hockey star, Claude Lemieux, plus hoops great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and model Cheryl Tiegs, whose photo you may have in your Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition collection. She was on the cover of a bunch of them ...

More MORE models

THERE should be some smashing models wearing equally smashing outfits on view for the Italian Fashion Extravaganza '99 tomorrow through Sunday at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Sri Maiava and hubby Ruz Rusden of MORE Models chose the boys and girls who'll model the latest designs from Salvatore Ferragamo, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, etc. And so those on Kalakaua Avenue can see the show, John Guild is setting up a $150,000 audiovisual system to pipe the show live to those on the street. Stacy Kamano of "Baywatch Hawaii" emcees ...
