Globetrotting golfers

LONG one of Hawaii's top amateur golfers, Al Souza has had numerous memorable adventures on the links, but one recent one topped all. The Paine-Webber stockbroker and longtime sidekick Mug shotNathan Minn were joined by retired music producer Jimmy Bowen and were guests of TV producer and musical scoring genius Mike Post on an excursion to Scotland and Ireland on Post's private Westwind II. They played at many historic courses including Carnoustie (scene of the last British Open of the millennium) and St. Andrews' old and new courses. The foursome also flew into Shannon Airport and played in both Killarny and Cork in Ireland. Post is a partner of Steve Bochco and Steven Cannell and scored the themes for such shows as "L.A. Law," "Rockford Files," "Hill Street Blues," "N.Y.P.D. Blue" and "Law and Order." Bowen had a hit tune in the 1960s with "Party Doll," and went on to produce the likes of Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks and Reba McIntyre. So don't ask Al or Nathan where they've been lately, or you'll hear the whole story ...

UNLIKELY titles for award winning mathematics papers: "The World's Biggest Taco." But that was what UH math profs David Bleecker and Lawrence J. Wallen called the paper which won the George Polya Award at the Summer Mathfest in Providence, R.I. The two captured the attention of their calculus students by setting up a problem to determine the precise cross-sectional curve that a taco shell should have in order that the shell hold the most stuff without "running beyond the border." To the surprise of nobody, their shell, molded along their curve, contained some 43 per cent more than the typical curve found in the commercial taco ...

Kitchen helper?

CHEF DK Kodama of Maui's hot Sansei Seafood Restaurant got married over the weekend to Lori Yokoyama of Honolulu. Look for Kodama to spend more time on Oahu as he's about to open a second eatery here. It was a dual wedding ceremony with Monsignor Terry Watanabe and Judge Jim Burns performing both a religious and civil ceremony. Sommelier Chuck Furuya and Burns' wife, Emme Tomimbang, co-emceed the reception and many of Kodama's chef pals prepared the food ...

EMME'S favorite line in Shakespeare must be, "If music be the food of life, play on." Most of her "Emme's Island Moments" TV specials deal with music and food. Coming up Aug. 27 you can look for "Local Grinds on the Road," as she joined a group of isle chefs including newlywed Kodama, Roy Yamaguchi, Chai Chaowasaree and Alan Wong feasting at Justin Vineyards in Paso Robles, Calif. Emme and the chefs also dined around New York. She even stopped by to meet the "Soup Nazi" who was featured on "Seinfeld." ...

Sure, blame me!

AFTER an item here some 15 years ago about Desmond Byrne proposing to Jo Kamae in the middle of her running the first ever obon celebration for the Japanese Chamber of Commerce at the downtown Ho'olaulea, Jo told friends she might not have said "Yes" if the column drop hadn't made the self-described curmudgeon's proposal so public. But they did marry and had many happy years together before Byrne died of cancer two weeks ago. At his memorial service Sunday, son Jahan Byrne said it best: "My father spent his last year preparing to meet God. We hope someone has been preparing God to meet him." ...
