Japanese prep star
headed to BYU-Hawaii

Japanese high school basketball sensation Yuta Tabuse will attend Brigham Young University-Hawaii this fall.

Tabuse, in Tokyo to work with the Japanese junior national team, said he does not expect to play in his first year, but will use the time to master English.

In his three years with Noshiro Kogyo, Tabuse led the Akita Prefecture school to all three high school national championship crowns.

Anders sets record at one-hour run

Denise Anders set a women's division record yesterday at the Schofield One-Hour Run held at Stoneman Field.

Anders ran 7 miles, 1,225 yards in 60 minutes, nearly a mile farther than the second-place finisher. The men's division winner was Lou Tomsic, who ran 9 miles and 1,212 yards.

Hui Nalu, Outrigger win distance titles

The Hui Nalu women and Outrigger men won the open division titles at the Duke Kahanamoku Race in the first event of the long distance canoe paddling season yesterday.

The Hui Nalu women covered their 6-mile course from Kailua Beach to Moku Lea Rock and back in 48 minutes, 48.29 seconds. Hui Nalu was second in 50:27.98.

Outrigger's men's crew paddled their 24-mile course from Kailua Beach to Duke Kahanamoku Beach in 3 hours, 6 minutes, 56.53 seconds. Lanikai was second in 3:10:15.45.

Malama finishes third at skating nationals

Kananililiakepela Malama, a student at Kapiolani Community College, finished third over the weekend at the National Collegiate Figure Skating Championships held in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Malama scored 4.5 after three days of competition. The winner was Melissa Parker of the University of Delaware with a 1.5, while Alexandra Kaye of CSU Sacramento was second with a 3.0.

Another World Series win for Babe Ruth team

At Mantoon, Ill, Neale Asato drove in three runs and Kasey Ko struck out 13 as Hawaii defeated Clifton Park., N.Y, 8-1, yesterday at the Babe Ruth World Series for 11-12 year-olds.

Ko lost his perfect game in the fifth inning when Andrew Brickwedel opened with a single. Ko finished with a two-hit complete game.

Hawaii (2-0) was to face Kennewick, Wash., today.

First junior state golf tournament this week

Seventy-two junior golfers from across the state will compete in the first-ever true statewide junior golf championship Wednesday and Thursday.

The Callaway Hawaii State Junior Championship, at the Coral Creek Golf Course in leeward Oahu, will include separate boys and girls division, in age group championships of 14 and under, 15-16 and 17-18.

Water polo tournament opens at UH complex

The 31st Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament got under way today at the University of Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku aquatic complex.

Preliminary round matches are from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. today through Thursday. The championship rounds run Friday and Saturday.

This year's event features the largest-ever field with 113 teams in nine divisions. Play is in girls 12-under through 18-under, boys 14-under through 18-under, and men's and women's open.

Thirty-one teams are entered from Hawaii, 18 from Hawaiian Islands, 10 from Warrior-Paumalu, two from Team Maui and one from Rainbow.
