Chefs stars rise
The art of self-indulgence reached new heights during the 20th century with the rise of the celebrity chef, acknowledged masters of the basic act of making something good to eat. Chefs were once the servants of the rich; in these more egalitarian times, we all feel we need an equal crack at their talents. They work to serve, right? Aided by a cultish following of media hounds, superstar chefs began to be followed as closely as sports figures or actors -- and there are similarities among all three in that style of creation becomes as important as the final result.
"Everyday Life" is a photo feature that examines the 20th Century.
