Newell brings
By Pat Bigold
Big Men to town
Star-BulletinHe coached San Francisco to the first NIT title when Harry Truman was in the White House.
He led California to an NCAA title the year Hawaii became a state. And he took the U.S. basketball team to an Olympic gold medal the year John F. Kennedy was elected president.
Basketball Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell will turn 84 on Aug. 31, but he's not history yet.
The pied piper of hardwood giants announced plans for his 22nd Pete Newell Big Man Camp yesterday at a Waikiki hotel.
The camp, featuring NBA and college players, will begin on Monday and run through Aug. 21 at Kamehameha's Kekuhaupi'o Gym for the second year in a row.
This is the sixth year Newell has brought the big men to town.
It is free and open to the public.
There will be 24 pros this year. The Dallas Mavericks' 7-foot-6 center Shawn Bradley will be making his first appearance at the camp, and so will the Indiana Pacers' No. 5 overall draft pick out of high school, Jonathan Bender.
The college registration list of 34 is what especially pleased Newell.
"The college camp is better than ever," he said. "We had to cut off enrollment three weeks ago."
Newell said he thinks Bradley will be a more effective player next NBA season because of an expected rule change allowing zoning on the strong side.
"The game will help him this year because he will be able to stay in the paint," said Newell. "He won't have to go out and cover a guy 15 to 18 feet from the basket."
College players pay $1,000 for tuition at the camp while NBA clubs pay $2,500 to enroll their players.
