Grants and donations

For the 12th consecutive year, the Nagoya Lions Club and Hawaii Kai Lions Club have donated money to the Hawaii Kai Public Library for books and other materials.

The Nagoya club of Japan gave $2,000 and a Japanese doll for display, and the Hawaii club gave $1,000 and repainted the sign on the front lawn.

The Friends of Hickam, a group of 135 civic and business leaders, have donated their time and $5,000 to construct a sidewalk cafe at Hickam's Hale Aina dining facility.

Alexander & Baldwin has awarded $5,000 to Hawaii Public Radio in support of the national news program, "Morning Edition."

GTE Hawaiian Tel also donated $6,000 to the station.

HMSA Foundation has awarded a $60,000 grant to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center to develop a program to improve the quality of life of children 3-10 years old.

Hawaii's Thousand Friends has received a $1,250 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to assist in establishing the Wailea Village Community Land Trust, to preserve the historic character of the village in Hamakua on the Big Island.

Frank A. Ke Jr. has been named executive chef and director of culinary services at the Royal Kona Resort, replacing Daniel Thiebaut, who plans to open a restaurant in nearby Waimea.

Ke previously served as executive chef at the Volcano Golf & Country Club, the Kona Lagoon Hotel, the Sea Mountain Resort, Restaurant & Golf Course, and the Kona Country Club's Vista Restaurant.

Paul A. Cox, director of the National Tropical botanical garden in Lawai, Kauai, has been appointed a director on the board of Hawaii Reserves Inc., a Laie-based property management company.

James B.H. Young, M.D., a urologist at The Queen's Medical Center, has been named "Ke Kauka Po'okela,'' Outstanding Physician for 1999, by the medical staff and employees.

The Maui AIDS Foundation has appointed Connie Frasier outreach director and Eduardo Hernandez resource development director.

The National Association of Home Builders has selected the Hawaii Remodelers Council, co-sponsors GE Capital Hawaii and Hawaii Remodeling magazine, as first-place winners in the Public Relations and Promotion Category of the annual Council Awards for Demonstrating Remodeling Excellence Awards program. They are co-sponsors of the "Remodel It Right" campaign.
