Model citizens to grace mags

NOT all those who appear on covers of magazines are stereotype models, young girls who are, more often than not, conspicuous consumers. For instance, Cecilia Blackfield, a civic leader and patron of Mug shotHonolulu's parks for some 40 years, is on the cover of the University of California Hastings College of Law quarterly as Hastings' first Honorary Alumnus. A grad of UC-Berkeley, Blackfield was recognized for her long support of Hastings, such as hosting receptions for Hastings alums locally and for creating a Hastings scholarship in honor of her late husband, William Blackfield ... Then there's Sierra Club president Jeff Mikulina. The subject of an Earth Day story in the Star-Bulletin back in April, the environmentally conscious Mikulina was the subject of a photo shoot Saturday for Details magazine, which intends to put him on the cover. The shot of the 25-year-old shows him in a rocking chair with his laptop and a surfboard, sort of microcosmically capturing life in Hawaii ...

BACK from London where she just finished her first year at Mountview Academy is actress/singer Kathleen Stuart. The 18-year-old Castle High grad is a protegee of Castle director Ron Bright, and has appeared in many musicals locally for several theater groups. She concluded her first year of theater studies at Mountview with the highest grade the school offers, only one of three in her class of more than 100 so honored ...

No microwaving here

TEN people gathered in the kitchen at David Paul's Diamond Head Grill last week, where they were instructed step by step on how to prepare their lunch. Chef David Paul was hosting the private lesson for construction and real estate consultants Paula and Ernie Harris and their guests. The couple had won the lesson in the Friends for Youth auction and there was much hilarity watching the likes of Clarence Lee, Carl Cunningham and Dennis Watts whip up a lunch of goat cheese and prawn terrine, kalua duck with wild rice and plum wine sauce and home-made chocolate ice cream with island fruit. Guest Glenna Wong admits Chef David Paul surveyed their work and offered the suggestion -- don't quit your day jobs ...

SPEAKING of David Paul's, a Jordan Wine Dinner will take place there Friday with guest chef Thomas Oden of Jordan Winery and featuring "J" Champagne plus three Jordan wines, ranging from 1996 to 1992. A relative bargain at $60 ... Of course if you're Matt Lauer or Katie Couric of the NBC "Today" show, the chefs come to you and charge you nothing. And so it will be Aug. 17 when Beverly Gannon of Maui does a cooking demonstration for the pair outside the show's studio in Rockefeller Center. She's promising them a "backyard barbecue, Maui-style." ...

THE second segment of the "Pacific Blue" series shot in Hawaii aired Sunday night and, against all odds, was even worse than the first, with two of the most egregiously staged "fights" in the history of film. Back to L.A., gang, and make it quick ...

Very near Mrs.

SORRY, guys, but the 51 beauties who'll be attending a big fashion show lunch next month at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, are taken. They are the "Mrs. America" contestants, here for the big pageant Sept. 3-14 at the Village, and the fashion show where they're appearing Sept. 5 is a benefit for Bishop Museum. Former First Lady Jean Ariyoshi is chairing the event. For tickets and information call 988-3388 ...
