PR group honors HEI executive

Scott Shirai, director of community relations for Hawaiian Electric Inc.,was awarded the 1999 Gregg W. Perry Public Relations Professional of the Year honor by the Hawaii chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Shirai has been in the public relations profession for more than 20 years.

He serves on the executive committee of the Honolulu Community Media Council, is president of Honolulu Community Television, chairman of the Hawaii Public Broadcasting Authority and is a director with the Better Business Bureau and the Hawaii Public Television Foundation.

Each year, PRSA Hawaii presents the award to an exemplary public relations practitioner who has made a major contribution to the profession.

Silicon Graphics cutting 3,000 jobs

SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Silicon Graphics Inc., a struggling maker of high-end computers, disclosed plans today to cut up to 3,000 workers, or one-third of its work force, and spin off its Cray Research supercomputer unit to try to sell it.

SGI said the moves would help it focus on selling software and computers related to the Internet, and exploit the explosive growth of the medium.
