With no ringers, mayor’s
team loses boat race

City Hall was abuzz last week about the previous weekend's annual dragon boat race pitting Mayor Jeremy Harris' Cabinet officials against City Council members and their staffs.

Undefeated in three races -- twice against the Council and once against Gov. Ben Cayetano's supporters -- the mayor's team finally lost one.

Deputy Fire Chief Bill Clark, the only experienced paddler on the team, said in previous years the mayor's team was loaded with Cabinet spouses, firefighters, police officers and lifeguards. This year, Clark said, "We actually had a team of all Cabinet members, either deputies or directors."

The Council team, featuring Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura and Councilman John DeSoto, won a free breakfast to be cooked by Harris' staff.
