'Red Violin' is a beaut

Finally got around to seeing "Red Violin" at the Varsity and wish I had seen it earlier so I could have sung it's praises sooner. The violin, constructed centuries ago by a master craftsman, has an incredibly interesting history. The story takes viewers on a beautiful journey to various continents through the ages and winds up in a modern day auction house ...

A group of Tony Smart's pals were at Neiman marcus' Mariposa Wednesday evening for his pre-birthday celebration. Tony, son of the late Parker Ranch owner Richard Smart, turns 62 tomorrow. "he can collect Social Security now," said Kimo Sutton. Other celebrants included Christine Kruchen, Arturo Montoya, Mike Manoman and John Marshall. Tony's actress daughter, Stefanie Smart, and her husband, Jim Triplett, were supposed to be there, but she was filming a "Baywatch" episode ... Miss America Nicole Johnson, a diabetic, is the guest of honor at a Juvenile Diabetes Foundation fund-raising dinner at the Mariposa tonight. Miss hawaii Candace Gentry and past Miss hawaiis will take part ...

Filmmaker Edgy Lee would love to have any film footage of the demolished Queen's Surf night club and entertainers performing there in the good old days. Bally Manager Valerie Sylvester will hold a "What to Wear to 'Miss Saigon' " fashion show as part of the Good Life Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition hall next Saturday at 2 p.m. Honolulu Club women and men will model the Bally fashions. Tickets for "Miss Saigon" and the musical's T-shirts will be among the door prizes. The show opens Oct. 7 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall ...

Paul klink, who came up with the popular "Live Aloha" bumper sticker, said at Donato's Tuesday that the number of stickers printed is now at the 2 million mark.
