The A Division will be the most hotly contested at tomorrow's 49th Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association state championship off Maui. State meet big stuff for
small canoe clubsThirty-three of the 51 clubs entered have crews competing in the A Division (8-or-fewer clubs). Twelve clubs are vying for the AA title with 9-17 crews.
There are six clubs in the AAA Division (18-plus), led by Lanikai's 33 crews qualifying. Hawaiian Canoe Club of Maui has 32 crews, followed by defending state champion Kailua (28), Outrigger (27), Malama Ula (22) and Hui Nalu (21).
Racing begins at 8 a.m. at Hanakaoo Beach near Lahaina. Paddlers representing all six canoe organizations and six islands will compete in 35 races and two special events, with a maximum of 14 crews in each event.
