Consolidated plans 3-D for Imax theater
Consolidated Amusement Co. today said it will spend more than $2 million to renovate its recently purchased Hawaii Imax Theatre in Waikiki and install 3-D projection equipment and the latest sound technology.Consolidated, which bought the theater from Utah-based Destination Cinema in June, said it will remain closed until October.
The company said the 3-D technology will allow the projection of large-format three-dimensional images on to the giant Imax screen.
Consolidated said several large-format 3D movies have been made including "T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous" and "Siegfried & Roy: The Magic Box." The theater will also screen large-format two-dimensional films.
The Imax Theatre, next to Consolidated's recently upgraded Waikiki Twin on Seaside Avenue, has been closed since the end of June.
Auntie Pasto's says expansion on hold
Plans for an Auntie Pasto's restaurant in Kapahulu are on hold pending city permit approvals, the restaurant operator says.Owner Ed Wary, who operates an Auntie Pasto's restaurant on Pensacola Street, had planned to open a second restaurant at 559 Kapahulu Ave. by June. But plans still are under review at the city Building Department.
Wary in January signed a 10-year lease on the Kapahulu property, which housed the Internet Cafe. He wants to renovate the building to seat 110 customers.
GTE to repurchase 26 million shares
IRVING, Texas _ GTE Corp., the local phone company being acquired by Bell Atlantic Corp., said it will buy back as many as 26 million shares to offset shares issued under employee benefit and dividend reinvestment programs.GTE's board authorized the repurchase of the stock on the open market until Bell Atlantic completes its purchase of GTE, expected by the beginning of next year.
GTE is Hawaii's dominant phone carrier.
