Star-BulletinBrigham Young quarterback Kevin Gilbride announced yesterday afternoon that he is transferring to the University of Hawaii.
Gilbride - the son of former San Diego Chargers head coach Kevin Gilbride - will report with the other Rainbow newcomers on Aug. 8.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder from Jacksonville, Fla., will have to sit a season. He will be a redshirt sophomore and have three years of eligibility remaining.
Gilbride was one of six BYU quarterbacks expected to battle it out in fall camp. He is the second signal caller to leave the Cougars' program. The other was Drew Miller, who transferred to the University of Montana.

WHO IS LEAVING BYU TO PLAY
FOOTBALL FOR THE RAINBOWSComing out of Bishop Kenny High, Gilbride was rated the 13th best quarterback nationwide by Blue Chip Illustrated. He was also named to the Super 75 in the South and was selected to the Jacksonville Times-Union Super 24.
Gilbride was originally recruited by Michigan State, Baylor, Kansas, Houston, San Diego State, Alabama-Birmingham and Memphis before signing with BYU.
This year, he talked with Lou Holtz at South Carolina and also considered Pittsburgh. His father is currently the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
UH head coach June Jones succeeded Gilbride as the San Diego Chargers' head coach last year.
The 19-year-old said Jones' relationship with his father helped him reach his decision.
"I (also) wasn't getting the chance I wanted to get here (BYU)," Gilbride said yesterday. "I didn't think I was going to get the chance without certain things happening."
The addition of Gilbride will help the Rainbows down the road.
Current UH quarterbacks Dan Robinson and Josh Skinner will use up their eligibility this season. That leaves only incoming freshman Mike Harrison, and UH veterans Shawn Withy-Allen and Bronson Liana under center.
"He's a great kid who will fit right in with what June is trying to get done," said BYU offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who recruited Gilbride out of high school. "He needs to spend some time getting stronger in the weight room.
"Competition was going to be really stiff here this fall and he's the kind of kid who wants to play right away. I respect that and his decision to transfer."
