Kaneohe traffic
worries parents
of school kids

Many residents want a four-way
stop at the Alaloa-Heeia junction

King Intermediate, Heeia Elementary and St. Ann's schools have something in common.

They're all within walking distance of the Kaneohe intersection of Alaloa and Heeia streets in Crown Terrace subdivision.

Residents say children going to and from school are endangered by motorists speeding on Heeia Street. Some want a four-way stop at the Alaloa-Heeia junction. A two-way stop there now halts vehicles traveling on Alaloa, but those on Heeia keep zipping along.

Rather than take Haiku Road between Kahekili and Kamehameha highways, motorists have discovered they get by with fewer stops if they cut through on Heeia.

Charles Djou, a Kaneohe Neighborhood Board member, brought this up at a June information meeting. Now city officials want to study traffic at the intersection to see if putting in a four-way stop there is justified.

"If you just look at that intersection, it just makes sense to have a four-way stop there," Djou said.

Cheryl Soon, director of city transportation services, said the city will conduct a traffic count to "analyze exactly what is going on at the intersection. We will go through the results so that we can take any corrective measures necessary."

Russell Duarte, a city bus driver and Heeia Street resident, said a four-way stop is needed to eliminate speeding in the area.

"There's a whole bunch of kids that live inside this area and walk to King Intermediate School," he said.
