UH names Katayama
tennis coach

Carolyn Katayama is the University of Hawaii women's tennis head coach, the university announced yesterday.

Katayama recorded a 46-23 record as Hawaii Pacific University head coach the last three years. She played for UH from 1975-78.

In 1976, she won the Hawaii Pacific Tennis Association individual and doubles championship.

As coach at HPU, her teams advanced three times to national tournaments -- the first two NAIA, the last NCAA Division II.

Two coaches at Kalani

Ronald Dement Jr., a longtime Kalani High School assistant football coach, will take over the reins of the varsity program when practice begins next week.

Dement has been a varsity assistant and junior varsity coach for the past 15 years and has been involved with the track and basketball programs, according to Kalani athletic director Gordon Miyashiro.

Also, Joey Akeo Miyashiro has returned to coach the girls' varsity volleyball program after a six-year hiatus. Miyashiro was an All-American for the University of Hawaii in the 1970s.

Lutheran has openings

Lutheran High School is seeking a head coach for junior varsity boys volleyball, varsity girls bowling and assistant coach for girls volleyball.

Those interested should send their resumes by Aug. 4 to Athletic Director Deems S. Utsumi, 1404 University Ave., Honolulu, 96822.

Quarterback Club lineup

Waianae Boxing Club coach Douglas Westbrook, Junior Olympic boxing champion Sampson Guillermo, new Farrington football coach Al Tanaka and Hawaii High School Athletic Association director Keith Amemiya will speak at the Quarterback Club's weekly meeting Monday at the Pagoda Restaurant. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon.

Watabu tops OJGA field

Casey Watabu fired a final-round 67 yesterday at Barbers Point Golf Course to win the boys' 15-17 title in the Oahu Junior Golf Association Stroke Play Tournament with a 54-hole total of 215.

Eric Fong finished two strokes off the pace after a closing 71.

Whitney-Reigh Asao (94-258) won the girls' 15-17 prize; Pomaikai Shishido (76-225) took boys' 13-14 honors and Ayumi Hori (76-234) paced the girls' 13-14 flight.
