Joe Hauoli Wong, the only player with Hawaii ties selected in this year's NFL Draft, signed a three-year contract with the Miami Dolphins yesterday. Dolphins sign Wong
Wong, a Kailua graduate from Waimanalo, played for Hawaii in 1995 before transferring to Brigham Young. He was a two-year starter on the Cougars' offensive line.
Wong signed for a $27,000 bonus and the minimum salary, according to the Miami Herald.
The 6-foot-6, 315-pounder was the Dolphins' final pick of the draft, going in the seventh round.

Hawaii girls eighth in golf
Leah Whiting shot a 77 - six strokes off the pace - and Merynn Ito had a 78, helping Hawaii's foursome to an eighth-place showing after yesterday's first round of the 17-team Girls' America's Cup golf tournament at Las Vegas.Shayna Miyajima shot an 83 and Joan Shimozaki an 85, giving Hawaii a 323 total.
Mexico led with a 220 aggregate. Northern California and Southern California were tied for second at 224.
Kalakaua girls' team off to Las Vegas tournament
The Kalakaua Basketball Foundation will send three teams to Las Vegas for the Aug. 4-7 Nike Summer Basketball Classic.Coach Dennis Agena will take two 17-and-under teams and one 14-and-under team to the tourney, to be played on the UNLV campus.
Among the top guns for the Hawaii teams are state girls' Player of the Year Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo, Raelene Self and Katannya Kapeli of Kamehameha and Milia Macfarlane of Punahou.
Kauai sailing canoes 1-2
Kauai's Tui Tonga and Boardriders clubs finished first and second in the 13th annual Na Holo Kai Outrigger sailing canoe race from Haleiwa to Poipu Sunday.Tui Tonga completed the interisland haul in 9 hours and 38 minutes, six minutes ahead of Boardriders.
