slug it out this weekendThe Hui Wa'a championship regatta begins at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow with the Kaneohe Canoe Club trying to knock off perennial power Lokahi. Kaneohe has won six of the seven regattas this season.
On Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m., the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association's regatta features powerhouses the Lanikai and Outrigger canoe clubs. Lanikai's five-regatta win streak was snapped last weekend by Outrigger.
The state championship is scheduled for Aug. 7, at Hanakaoo Beach, Maui.
Seki finishes third
Jim Seki Jr., of Honolulu, shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to finish third with a 54-hole total of 216 in the boys division of the AJGA Ashworth/Golf Design Junior Championship at Coto de Caza, Calif.Jason Hartwick of Sacramento, Calif., fired a final-round 70 to win by three strokes over Ron Won of Irvine, Calif.
Judokas win at nationals
The Salt Lake Judo Club won a combined total of five gold medals and three silvers at two national competitions earlier this month in California.At the U.S. Judo Federation junior nationals in Irvine, three judokas won their respective divisions: Aaron Maki (16-year-olds, 123 pounds), Kristi Watanabe (11-year-olds, 60 pounds) and Tadd Fujikawa (7-year-olds, 67 pounds). Placing second were Brandon Maki (18-year-olds, 132 pounds) and Derron Maki (8-year-olds, 50 pounds).
Young cagers need kokua
