Bright future for events firm

YOU may not have heard of Golden Herringbone Productions, since it's a rather low-key outfit, but the group produced the Honolulu Symphony Ball as a debut into the local event market, and has produced a series of events at the Hyatt Maui that included such names as Willie Nelson and Hal Ketchum. Mug shotIt featured vocalist Tom Postillo at the Ihilani in January and at the Heart Ball the following month with a return engagement (to be filmed for HBO) in the fall. GHP has also created events to showcase local performers. The firm's David Macarthur is so sold on Larry Paxton and Melissa Short that he's arranging a venue to show off their talents in Las Vegas. In addition, he's personally arranged auditions for Short in N.Y. with a couple of top Broadway agents. Look for more from GHP locally -- aside from its Mainland concerts, it has a couple in the works here featuring two of the most sought after stars in the business ...

SPEAKING of Melissa Short, the former Miss Hawaii was huddling with Dede Guss, the newly-crowned Mrs. Hawaii, at Don Ho's Island Grill at a lanai table when grill co-owner Barry Silverman spotted them and came over. He's a pal of Dede's husband, Barron Guss of ALTRES. Dede'll be representing Hawaii in the Mrs. America pageant at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Sept. 14, and Melissa was offering some pageant tips ...

It beats Tennessee

EACH year, if you believe their commercials, Saturn owners drive to the factory in Tennessee for a big love-fest with their cars. It's tough for local Saturn owners to head for Memphis, so they're going one step better. They'll form caravans from both Pearlridge and Windward Mall Saturday morning, and drive to Kualoa Ranch for a "Saturn Homecoming." Abby Arnold should be easy to spot in her Saturn -- she'll be dressed as "Razzle Dazzle" the clown and will entertain at the party ...

SO you've got this koa fourposter bed in your high-rise apartment you want to remove, but it won't fit in the elevator. What to do? If you're C. Brewer honcho Doc Buyers, you call Martin & MacArthur, who made the bed years ago. One of their craftsmen came to the rescue and decided there was but one solution -- he sawed the headboard and footboard into pieces. The next day, the bed, in its new quarters, was restored with new splines and glued together, as good as new. M&M figures "Buyers should be happy." ...

NOT everyone has one, but Mikhail Gorbachev does. So, too, does former President George Bush, Queen Elizabeth II and Emperor Hirohito. And now Kaiser Medical Center has one too. One what? Why, an umeke -- a pedestal or covered calabash bowl -- carved by master craftsman Stewart Medeiros. He was so grateful to the doctors and nurses at Kaiser for saving his life that he presented them with one 10-feet tall. It's on display at the medical center ...

Impress for less

LOTS of activity around the old Woolworth location downtown yesterday. Mel Wilmore, president of Ross Dress for Less, was there for a special preview party, and everyone can stop by tomorrow when the Bobby Moderow Trio, usually heard at Roy's in Hawaii Kai, will play from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Then on Monday, there'll be swing dancing on the mall with an 11-piece band, Hula Joe and the Hut Jumpers, also from 11:30. A chance to swing, and perhaps be swayed into buying something ...
