Ishii-Chin team in semifinals

Defending champions David Ishii and David Chin advanced to this morning's semifinals of the Aloha Section PGA Four-Ball Match Play Championship at the Oahu Country Club.

Ishii and Chin defeated Dave Kowalczyk and Brad Davis, 2 and 1, yesterday and were to meet the Beau Yokomoto-Tommy Hines team today. Yokomoto and Hines advanced with a 1-up win over Andrew Feldmann and Mike Iyoke.

In the other semifinal today, Kirk Nelson and Brian Sasada took on John Rose and Ben Hongo.

Nelson-Sasada defeated the team of Mark Morrison and Scott Gileta, 4 and 2, while Rose-Hongo beat Kevin Ralbowsky and Ken Springer, 5 and 3.

The 18-hole final was to start at noon today.

Beach volleyball Saturday

Some of Hawaii's top men's beach volleyball players will compete in the second Players Championship Saturday at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Twenty two-man teams will vie for prizes and a $1,000 purse.

Among those slated to play are Jon Andersen, Marc Haine and former University of Hawaii players Naveh Milo, Jason Salmeri, Russell Lockwood and Ole Kaven.

Double-elimination play begins at 8:30 a.m.

Proceeds from the event, part of the Hawaii Volleyball Beach Circuit, will benefit the Honolulu Shriners Hospital for Children.

Sailing canoe race Sunday

More than a dozen entries from five islands are expected to compete Sunday in the 13th Na Holo Kai, a 90-mile outrigger sailing canoe race from Oahu to Kauai.

The race is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. at Haleiwa Beach Park. The first finishers should arrive around 3 p.m. at Poipu Beach Park.

The event is part of the 10-race Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association's season that runs from April through October.

Lotulelei earns wrestling All-American distinction

Maui High's Saia Lotulelei earned All-American honors after finishing seventh Monday in the 242-pound class in the Greco-Roman portion at the USA Wrestling Junior/Cadet National Championships at Fargo, N.D.

The top eight wrestlers in each weight class earn All-American status. Lotulelei, from Wailuku, won the state 215-pound title as a sophomore this past season.

Three other wrestlers from Hawaii are competing at the event: Radford's Sean Collins (132) and Jesse Rolon (132) and Kaahumanu Hou's Kapena Kamai (275).

Collins and Rolon are representing Team Hawaii, coached by John Robinson, while Lotulelei and Kamai are competing for the Maui Jets, coached by Bob Anderson.

The freestyle portion of the championships got under way yesterday.

National canoe meet features outriggers

USA Canoe/Kayak's 1999 Sprint National Championships, which will take place Aug. 3-7 at Mirror Lake in Lake Placid, N.Y., will feature a 200-meter sprint of traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoes on the final day of races.

More than 300 athletes, including former and future Olympic team athletes, are expected to participate.
