Scholarships and academic honors
Jared David Acoba has received the annual research award sponsored by the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii and Pharmacare. He is a second-year medical student at the University of Hawaii.
Kyleen Lee of Honolulu, a graduate of St. Andrew's Priory High School, has won a $7,000 President's Scholarship from Pacific Lutheran University. It is renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study.
Tiffany Au of Stevenson Middle School is the grand prize winner in the 6-11 age group in GEICO's 12th annual Safety Belt Poster Contest. She won a $375 cash award and $125 as the first-place winner in the Western region; her school received $500 for art supplies. Christopher Montoya of Holualoa School was the second-place winner, $75; and Darrell C.K. Huston of St. Joseph's Elementary School, third, $50.
In the 12-15 age group, Celestino Matutino Jr. of Kalakaua Middle School won first place, $125; Rong Zhong Lao, Central Middle, second, $75; and Angelo Kho, Kalakaua, third, $50.
Hawaii Pacific University's student newspaper, Kalamalama, has been recognized as the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper of 1998 from a university by the Society of Professional Journalists in the Region XI Mark of Excellence Competition.
