Tar Heels top field
for Maui Invitational

Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse North Carolina heads the eight-team field for the Chaminade-hosted 16th Maui Invitational basketball tournament, to be played Nov. 22-24 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Joining the Tar Heels and the Silverswords will be Florida, Purdue, Georgetown, USC, Utah State and Memphis.

ESPN will televise six games, including Chaminade's tournament opener.

Brackets have yet to be determined.

Hammerheads play today

The Hawaii Hammerheads, one game off the lead in the Indoor Professional Football League, begin their stretch run today with a visit to the Mississippi Fire Dogs.

The Hammerheads (9-4) are trying to overtake first-place Texas (10-3) while the third-place Fire Dogs (6-7) are aiming to secure a playoff berth.

Hawaii's Eddie Klaneski is the league leader in all-purpose yards with 1,404 and quarterback Tim Carey is the top-rated passer.

Faliniko Vitale is No. 2 in scoring (112 points) and No. 3 in rushing (267 yards).

Klaneski and Chris Paogofie are the defensive ringleaders.

Four hot in NCAA summer hoops

Michael McIntyre poured in 37 points, Llewellyn Smalley popped for 36 ,Josh Newburn scored 33 and Marco Johnson had 31 in NCAA Summer Basketball League action last night at the Kaimuki High School gym.

But only Newburn was on a winning team. He led Central Medical Clinic to a 124-103 victory over Smalley, Johnson and the Kahala Sons.

McIntyre's high of 37 came in Honolulu Ford's 110-99 loss to Electricians Hawaii, which was triggered by Predrag Savovic, with 28.

Summer League team wins

George Shuford went 3-for-5 and Corey Ishio drove in three runs as the Oahu Summer League All-Stars trimmed the Hawaii Island Movers, 14-6, last night at Rainbow Stadium.

The Oahu Summer League team struck for five runs in the second inning and seven more in the third.

Lee DeSoto pitched six strong innings for the victory.

Mark Okano and Woody Cliffords paced the Island Movers with three hits apiece.

Surfing Triple Crown

The Van's G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing returns to Oahu's North Shore at three big-wave venues from Oct. 30 to Dec. 21.

The three events will determine the Association of Surfing Professional world championship titles for the year.

The Mountain Dew Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters, final jewel in the Triple Crown, is in its 29th year - the longest running professional surfing competition in the United States.

The Triple Crown begins with the $80,000 G-Shock Hawaiian Pro Nov. 12-24 at Haleiwa. It will be followed by the $100,000 Rip Curl Cup Nov. 26-Dec.8 at Sunset Beach.

The capper is the $120,600 Pipe Masters at the famed Banzai Pipeline.

Wahine like Wailea

The Wailea Golf Club on Maui has been named one of the most women-friendly golf facilities in the country for the fourth time by Golf for Women magazine.

The magazine's August issue lists 100 winners in its annual Top Fairways Award, which draws upon nominations from its readers.
