Brothers sign to play
baseball for ’Bows

The University of Hawaii baseball team has signed two all-star infielders, coach Les Murakami announced yesterday.

Patrick and Dany Scalabrini, brothers from Quebec, Canada, were named to the All-Region II team last season while playing for Seminole State (Okla.) Junior College.

The Trojans went 58-8 and advanced to the NJCAA World Series.

Patrick Scalabrini, 22, hit .406 with 93 RBIs as a third baseman. Dany Scalabrini, 24, batted .469 with 32 doubles as a second baseman.

They are from Waterville, Quebec.

Movers edge West Oahu

Gregg Omori had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two as the Hawaii Island Movers built a seven-run lead and then held off a late surge by West Oahu Select for an 11-10 summer baseball victory last night at Rainbow Stadium.

Omori stroked two doubles and a single. Garrett Kurahara led West Oahu with three hits and two runs batted in.

Pigskin Pigout July 22

The fourth annual Murphy's Rainbow Pigskin Pigout, a benefit for University of Hawaii football booster club Na Koa, will take place at 5 p.m., July 22, at Murphy's Bar & Grill in downtown Honolulu.

The benefit, which costs $75, includes heavy pupus, cocktails, live and silent auctions, live music and an opportunity to meet UH head football coach June Jones and his staff.

The event has raised $150,000 over the last three years. Call 531-0422 for information.

Jr. golf deadline Monday

The entry deadline has been extended to Monday for the July 26 qualifying round for the Callaway Hawaii State Junior Championship at the Pearl Country Club.

Thirty spots are open in a potential field of 102 for the age-group event and entry fees have been cut to $10 from $20.

To enter, call the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association at 532-0559.

Boat-building benefit

The elite sailors of the Transpacific yacht race will try to build seaworthy sailboats in two hours in the Plywood Cup Challenge, a benefit for United Cerebral Palsy, on Aug. 16 at Ala Moana Beach Park.

Each team will attempt to build a vessel from 1 sheets of plywood, a handful of manual tools and tubes of caulking. Then they'll try to sail it around a short triangular course next to Magic Island.

Isle volleyball team ninth

The Hawaiian Warriors Volleyball Club, made up of several Hawaii prep all-stars, finished ninth in the 52-team 18 and under open division at the recent USA Volleyball Junior Nationals at New Orleans.

The team was led by Academy of Pacific graduate James Butler, an All-American and MVP of the Haili Men's Volleyball Tournament earlier this year.

He and teammate Tony Ching will attend the University of Hawaii this fall.

Hilo Booster Club officers

Kelly Moran was re-elected as University of Hawaii-Hilo Booster Club president at the club's annual meeting last month.

Also elected were Pat Gorman, vice president; John Burnett, secretary, and Alben Namihira, treasurer.

Tennis tourney set

The Hawaii Vet/Seniors Tennis Tournament is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 1 at the Diamond Head Tennis Center.

Play will be in men's and women's singles and doubles and open to players ages 30-80.

The entry deadline is July 23. Fees are $3.50 for singles, $5 per doubles team.
