Shops romance wraps up

RETAILS of the City: There's going to be a wedding tomorrow at the King's Shops in Waikoloa Beach Resort. It's fitting, too, since the bride, Savina Clarke, and her fiance, Johnathan Wendin, met there, Mug shotwork there, fell in love there and decided the gazebo there was the perfect place for exchanging vows. Savina works at Maui Divers and Johnathan is G.M. of Roy's Waikoloa Bar & Grill. That should make catering the affair a snap. Following the reception, the new bride and groom plan to honeymoon on Oahu ... Wendin's boss, Roy Yamaguchi, will be one of those featured in Emme Tomimbang's new special, "Island Business Legends." While Roy is merely celebrating his 10th year in business in Hawaii, Emme will also take a look at other companies with longer track records: Music producers Jack & Jon de Mello (50 years), Hawaiian Airlines (70 years), City Mill (100 years), Queen's Medical Center (140 years) and Liberty House, grand-daddy of them all at 150 years. This "Emme's Island Moments" anniversary show will air July 23 on KHON-TV ...

'Angels' and demons

AN inescapable feeling engulfs those who come away from viewing Manoa Valley Theatre's powerful production of Tony Kushner's award-winning play, "Angels in America: Perestroika." Just because you're gay doesn't mean you're happy. Many of the characters in the work are homosexuals but none fit the old sense of gaiety. Under J. Thomas Kidd's taut direction, humor and pathos intertwine. This was especially true of Derek Calibre, in a pivotal role as an AIDS-infected ex-lover turned prophet (in his dreams?) who, not surprisingly, finds himself alone and ailing at the end. While Calibre stood out, the entire cast was uniformly strong. As for the language, which knows no boundaries, let the theater-goer be forewarned -- it's not for the squeamish. I'm reminded of the Ogden Nash quatrain: "Tell me a word/That you've often heard/But it makes you squint/To see it in print." To that I might add, "Or make you rage/When you hear it onstage" ...

"BIG" Mike Palcic had a change of heart and was sworn in as a member of Neighborhood Board No. 5 after being asked to leave a recent meeting. He'd been elected but chose not to take an oath. Palcic confesses he may have been a bit paranoid when he was asked to leave and saw Mayor Jeremy Harris' aide, Dave Chun, whispering to board chairwoman Karen Ahmai when she said she was calling police. Palcic suspected Chun was orchestrating his removal, later to learn he told her "You can't do that." It's settled now, but there can be political fireworks, even on the neighborhood board level ...

That was quick

BOWING to the wishes of some vocal residents of the nearby Kahala Beach Apartments, the Kahala Mandarin decided to eliminate the dance music of Fascinatin' Rhythm there on Saturday nights, a fact duly noted here. I don't know if there was a low murmur of disapproval, but the Rhythm is back, headed by Shari Lynn. The hotel hopes that by moving the speakers they can cater to their guests without annoying their neighbors. Now, if they could just get a good nonalcoholic brew there, a suggestion I made after being given a Hobson's Choice of O'Doul's Tuesday. I had stopped by the lobby bar to hear the excellent musical sounds of Jay Marion. But to have no foreign nonalcoholic option is a travesty ...
