Lee lone isle golfer
to make Publinx cut

Regan Lee was the lone Hawaii qualifier as the U.S. Amateur Men's Public Links Championships began match-play competition today at Alton, Ill.

Lee, the 1999 State Amateur Stroke Play champion, shot a 72 yesterday for a 36-hole score of 143. The cutoff was 146.

Kauai's Jonathan Ota missed the cut by one stroke after shooting a 76 yesterday. Shannon Sibayan, Duane Pavao and Guy Yamamoto posted 36-hole scores of 149.

Four-Ball Match Play golf

Four-time winners David Chin of Navy-Marine Golf Course and David Ishii of Pearl Country Club will defend their title in the Aloha Section PGA's Four-Ball Match Play Championship at the Oahu Country Club next week.

The qualifying round will be played Monday starting at noon. Match play begins Tuesday and winds up with the final Wednesday at noon.

Entry deadline extended

The entry deadline has been extended to July 21 for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Hawaii chapter, golf tournament, to be played July 23 at the Ala Wai course.

The three-person team, modified scramble will start at noon. There are openings for 40-50 more golfers.

Cost is $50 per person. Contact Earl Galdeira at 839-5575.

Karate-do medalists

Led by 16-year-old Aaron Oandasan, 9-year-old Millie Ann Jovenal and 8-year-old John Orr, Hawaii competitors won nine gold medals in the recent USA National Karate-do Championships at Charleston, W. Va.

Oandasan took overall honors in the junior cadet division, qualifying for the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria on Oct. 28-31.

Jovenal brought home three gold medals - in forms, sparring and performance. Orr won two events, taking gold in forms and sparring.

Other gold medalists in forms were Meagan Fujimoto, 13; Harry Placido, 12, and Wesley Yoshikawa, 54.

Junior Olympic track meet

The Hawaii Association USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships will be held Saturday at Kaiser High School starting at 7:30 a.m.

The top three finishers in each event qualify for the National Junior Olympic Championships July 27-Aug. 1 at Omaha, Neb.

The meet will be run in two-year age brackets from 9 to 18. Entrants must be members of USA Track and Field.

There will be a special event in which Erwin Jaskulski will try for a world 200 meters record for 95-year-old men. Jaskulski set the age-group record for 100 meters during the Punahou Relays in May.

Pac-5 seeks coaches

The Pac-5 athletic program is looking for head coaches for varsity boys soccer and swimming. Interested and qualified candidates are asked to call John Hom at 6768.

Elliott Kapalua tennis chief

Mark Elliott is the new Director of Tennis for the Kapalua resort on Maui. Elliott who most recently served as tennis director at the Imperial Courts Tennis Club in Aptos, Calif., has had more than 20 years experience as a player, coach and director.
