‘Bumpy’ taking smoother
tack toward sovereignty

QUESTION: What ever happened to longtime militant Hawaiian activist Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele?

ANSWER: A bit less militant now, Kanahele made a comeback Jan. 17 when he was elected a delegate to the Hawaiian sovereignty convention, expected to take place sometime soon.

Kanahele, leader of the Nation of Hawaii organization, said after his election victory that it's time for Hawaiian groups to stop feuding and start listening to one another.

In February 1998 he finished serving the remaining two weeks of a four-month sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of interfering with a federal agent. U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor decided Kanahele had changed during criminal proceedings and had come to realize the need to work within the system. Gillmor imposed a four-month sentence but gave Kanahele credit for 3 months he earlier served while he was incarcerated without bail.

Kanahele also has served on the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board.

He was appointed to fill a vacancy in August 1996 but did not retain a seat in spring 1997 neighborhood board elections. He was appointed again to fill a vacancy in August 1997 but did not seek an elective seat in spring 1999.
