HVCB serves up aloha in New Jersey
Hula dancers, Hawaiian music, leis and flowers, macadamia nuts and other foods are being shown off in Mahwah, N.J. this week, as the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau makes a tourism pitch at the A&P Tennis Classic.The week's schedule includes offering Hawaii food and drink samples at a concert by the group Chicago; a "Keiki Day," teaching New Jersey children crafts such as making bookmarks out of seaweed; and presenting a shell lei to each of 7,000 fans at a Beach Boys concert Saturday night.
Chicago firm buys isle sports marketer
Chicago-based Lighthouse Holdings Inc. has acquired sports-marketing business Sports Producers Hawaii Inc., which since 1991 has marketed and managed events in the islands and provided TV coverage.Maui-based Sports Pro manages the MasterCard Senior PGA Championship, the EMC2 Kaanapali Classic and the Sony Open in Hawaii, as well other events in Hawaii and on the West Coast. Founders Ray Stosik, president, and his wife Sherel will stay on and continue to manage Sports Pro, the companies said yesterday. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Sony, Time Warner to acquire CDNow
NEW YORK -- Time Warner Inc. and Sony Corp., two of world's largest media companies, agreed to buy online music and video seller CDNow Inc. and combine it with their Columbia House venture to add customers and gain access to a wide variety of advertisers. Once the transaction is completed, Sony and Time Warner will each own 37 percent of the new public company and CDNow shareholders will own the remaining 26 percent, the companies said.
