101 years ago, "in the interest of the Hawaiian body politic," Sanford Dole gave up the sovereignty of the Republic of Hawaii, which only a few years earlier had overthrown the monarchy.
The islands, discovered by bold South Pacific seafarers, united by the warrior chief Kamehameha, now controlled by the grandsons of missionaries and populated by Asian workers, became a territory of the United States of America.
The annexation spurred a boom in agriculture and immigration that did much to shape the face of modern Hawaii.
