World War I: 9,800 served, 102 died.Boy falls from cliff fleeing from police
HILO -- A 16-year-old boy who ran from police investigating a report of a nighttime disturbance fell into the Wailuku River and died early today, police said. He was identified as Shelton S. Maruyama of Hilo.Police received a 3:32 a.m. call about a loud noise at the former KPUA radio building on the bank of the river in an upper part of the city.
Several people ran when police arrived, including Maruyama, who apparently fell over a 50-foot cliff in the dark.
Fire Department rescue divers located his body in a pond below the cliff at 6:12 a.m.
Studies to begin on Ala Wai dredging
Field work studies will begin in the coming two weeks for the Ala Wai Canal dredging project, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.Public use of the canal will not be affected during the work, which is expected to take two to three months. Field work will include collection of soil samples and chemical analysis.
The dredging is meant to remove sedimentation, reduce potential for flooding and enhance recreational usage. The department expects to put the project out to bid by the end of the year with construction starting early next year.

WAILUKU -- A 27-year-old Lahaina man was in critical condition this morning at Maui Memorial Hospital after the vehicle he was driving collided with another in west Maui.Robin Starkovich was ejected from a convertible car in the crash about a third of a mile north of Ukumehame Beach Park yesterday.
Sean T. Trainer, 22, a passenger who was also ejected from the car, was listed in fair condition at Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.
Police said Starkovich was driving on Honoapiilani Highway toward Lahaina when he tried to overtake another car and collided with a station wagon at about 5:17 p.m.
The driver of the station wagon, Glenn E. Davis, 52, of Kihei was listed in guarded condition at Maui Memorial.
Land search set today for missing Maui boy
WAILUKU -- Maui fire officials were planning to conduct a ground search today for a missing 15-year-old Lahaina boy last seen by friends Saturday in waters off Koki Beach south of Hana Town.The boy was swimming with friends who returned to shore a little after noon."When they got back to shore, they noticed he was missing," Assistant Fire Chief Richard Fernandez said. A search Saturday and yesterday turned up nothing.

Police yesterday arrested a 30-year man for allegedly attempting to suffocate his girlfriend in her Waikiki apartment.The woman, 34, told police he became violent after she tried to end their relationship and asked him to move out of her apartment in the 2600 block of Ala Wai Boulevard. He was arrested at 11:35 a.m. on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and kidnapping.
HILO -- Police are continuing their investigation of two businesses where 17 people were arrested Friday for drug offenses.
In a raid at the Tint Shop and Butch's Auto Repair, police said they seized suspected drugs including crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription pills and marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Those arrested were released pending analysis of the drugs.
