1893: London's Tower Bridge opens to span river Thames. This compass rose, with Honolulu at the center,

1895: Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association formed.
Also: Robert Wilcox leads unsuccessful coup to restore the monarchy.
1898: In July, President William McKinley signs Congressional resolution annexing Hawaii to United States; the U.S. flag is raised here, right. Also: Spain declares war on U.S. in April, and Hawaii assumes strategic importance as military hub. The first federal garrrison troops set up temporary post, Camp McKinley near Diamond Head. The Spanish-American War would last 112 days. 1900: On June 14, President McKinley signs Organic Act that forms Territory of Hawaii -- all laws of the United States are now enforced by territorial government headed by Gov. Sanford Dole.
Also: A January fire, intended to purify Chinatown of bubonic plague goes out of control and destroys 38 acres; thousands lose homes and businesses.
1902: Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, shown here on a button with President Taft, chosen delegate to U.S. Congress.
Also: Trans-Pacific cable completed.1903: George R. Carter becomes the territory's second governor.
Also: Legislature petitions for statehood.
Also: In Kitty Hawk, N.C., the Wright Brothers make the first sustained manned flight in a controlled gas-powered aircraft.1904: Original Waikiki Aquarium opens.
1906: Dole Cannery becomes world's largest fruit cannery. Also: First Filipino laborers arrive.
1907: Fort Shafter becomes the territory's first permanent military post. Also: The College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, predecessor to the University of Hawaii , opens at Thomas Square. Also: Walter Frear is appointed governor.
1908: City and County of Honolulu formed; Joseph J. Fern is first mayor.
Also: Pearl Harbor construction is authorized, leading to the harbor's dredging, above.
Also: Model T Ford is introduced on the mainland on Aug. 12. It's priced at $850.50, comes in sleek black only, and becomes a hot seller.1910: First airplane flight in Hawaii happens at Moanalua Polo Field.
1912: Duke Kahanamoku, above with Johnny Weissmuller, wins gold medal in 100-meter swim in Olympics Games in Sweden.
Also: Outdoor Circle formed.
Also: The "unsinkable" ship Titanic hits an iceberg; 1,513 of the 2,224 aboard perish.1913: Library of Hawaii, Hawaii's first public library, opens in downtown Honolulu. Also: Lucius E. Pinkham appointed governor.
Also: First Hollywood films made in Hawaii are "Hawaiian Love" and "The Shark God."1914: World War I begins in Europe.
Also: Honolulu Zoo opens.
1915: Bus service inaugurated by Honolulu Rapid Transit Co. It supplements electric streetcars, above, which were first used in 1901. 1916: Waiahole Tunnel opens, supplying Windward water to Central Oahu fields.
Also: Hawaii National Park is created; in 1961, it's renamed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Also: Albert Einstein's theory of relativity revolutionizes physics world.1917: U.S. declares war on aggressor Germany in April.
Also: Queen Liliuokalani dies at Washington Place. A funeral procession, left, bears her body up Nuuanu to the Royal Mausoleum. 1918: Charles J. McCarthy appointed governor.
