Pyewacket pulls away
in Transpac

Pyewacket widened its lead over Zephyrus IV yesterday during the 40th Biennial Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.

Bob McNeil and John Parrish's 75-foot Zephyrus IV lost 42 more nautical miles to Roy E. Disney's 72-foot Pyewacket and trailed by 54 miles at the morning's roll call.

In fact, Pyewacket had a new challenger: Doug Baker's 68-foot turbo sled Magnitude from the Long Beach Yacht Club, now only 25 miles behind the leader.

Pyewacket passed Two Guys On the Edge, which started four days earlier, and was nearest Honolulu with 518 miles to go.

The 30-foot Two Guys on the Edge, sailed by Les Vasconcellos and Bruce Burgess of Waikiki Yacht Club, seemed to be proceeding well despite halyard problems.

Wong eliminated

Hawaii's Kevin Wong and teammate Rob Heidger, seeded eighth, were eliminated after dropping a 15-11 decision in 56 minutes to 10th-seeded Jorre Kjemperud and Vegard Hoidalen of Norway during the first day of the FIVB Beach Volleyball Phillips Open yesterday at Stavenger, Norway.

Speakers at the Monday luncheon of the Honolulu Quarterback Club are: Dan Cisco, author of the book "Hawaii Sports: History, Facts & Statistics," Mid-Pacific Institute baseball coach Dunn Muramaru and University of Hawaii associate athletic director Marilyn Moniz Kaho'ohanohano.

Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant is served at 11:30 a.m. The program begins at noon. The public is invited.

Isle spikers take title

The ASICS Rainbows 14's won the 14's Open title in the USA Junior National Volleyball Championships Monday night at New Orleans.

The Hawaii team defeated City Beach Select of southern California, 15-12, 15-10, in the final.

Members of the championship team are Kanoe Kamanao, Kiana Kauwe, Ashley Dutro, Marrissa Chow, Emalia Pietsch, Puna Richardson, Meagan Watson, Alicia Arnott, Hokulii Tamayori, Crystal Ueno, Jennifer Lee, Mounia Nihipali and Melanie Tang.

Their coach is Kari Anderson.

Wahine ticket sales

Season tickets for 1999 University of Hawaii women's volleyball games will be on sale Monday through July 28 at the UH ticket office on the main concourse of the Stan Sheriff Center.

After Monday, ticket office hours are 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Season tickets also can be purchased by telephone (944-2697) starting at noon Monday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. thereafter. Only Visa and Mastercard credit will be accepted.

Lower level seats (only single seats are available) cost $155 and there is a $15 scholarship donation charge.

Upper level prices are $115 (adults), $100 (seniors), $70 (students ages 4-18) and $70 (UH students).

There is a $4 handling charge for each order and convenience fees will be added for phone orders.

When buying season tickets, fans will have the option of buying seats for the NCAA final four matches, scheduled for Dec. 16-18 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Individual-match ticket sales will begin Aug. 24.

'Spirit of Aloha' in France

A group of Hawaii surfers and canoe paddlers left yesterday for France, where they will take part in the annual Biarritz Surf Festival.

The theme of this year's week-long event is "Big Wave Riding." and the "Spirit of Aloha" will be celebrated.

The festival features longboard and tandem surfing competition, canoe surfing, night surfing and beach parties.

Representing Hawaii will be surf legend Clyde Aikau; body surfing champion Mark Cunningham; big-wave aficionados Titus Kinimaka of Kauai, Brock Little of Oahu and Michel Larronde of Maui; outrigger canoe racing champ Walter Guild, and surfing ambassador Fred Hemmings.

'Chip It In' golf to help UH

The third annual "Chip It In' golf tournament will be played Aug. 2 at Honolulu Country Club to benefit the University of Hawaii Athletics Department.

Cost is $175 per player or $525 per three-person team. Entry forms are available at Schuman Carriage or at the UH Athletics Department. For more information, call Anne Hunter at 592-4444 or Ed Inouye at 956-4531.

Team USA loses to Spain

The USA volleyball team failed to advance to the semifinals of the World University Games, losing to host Spain, 25-27, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24, 18-20.

Hawaii's Clay Stanley had three kills for Team USA.
