Karen T. Nakamura, a contractor with more than 30 years experience, now guides the 500-member Building Industry Association of Hawaii. Builders group chooses Nakamura
Nakamura sold her business, Remodeling Specialists Hawaii, to King Builders last year before taking the new job.
"All of my experience as a contractor comes to fruition (at BIA)," Nakamura said. "I understand what (contractors) are going through and I also can assist consumers looking for help."
She served as BIA president in 1986 and was the chairwoman for the National Remodelors Council in 1991, the first woman to hold that position. She also served on the executive committee of the National Association of Home Builders in 1991, and as a national board member for Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. from 1993-1996.
Nakamura currently is board secretary of the American Red Cross Hawaii chapter, trustee on the Augustine Educational Foundation, and commissioner on the Building Board of Appeals.
