Supermarket revises
its bingo game

Question: I have a question regarding the Times Supermarket bingo game. We used to be able to get the bingo cards for free, but now, they say we have to buy something to get a card. Isn't that gambling if we have to buy something?

Answer: There are three ways to get a bingo card -- two that involve purchases and one which doesn't, said Times spokesman David Higashiyama.

If you buy certain specified items, you can get one free card for each item purchased. If you make $50 worth of purchases (excluding certain items and not necessarily one of the "bingo" items), you will receive one free card.

"The third way to get cards is to mail to us a self-addressed, stamped envelope and we give you a few free cards," Higashiyama said. Mail it to: Times Bingo Contest, 2153 N. King St., 2nd Floor, Honolulu HI 96819.

Higashiyama said the contest this year, which ends July 30, was changed to allow customers ways to obtain more cards.

Q: Why did they remove the water fountain from the Ala Wai Golf Course driving range? Is it because they are trying to make money off their beverage sales?

A: It's because of drainage problems, said a spokesman for Sure Shot of Hawaii, which runs the driving range.

"We don't have proper drainage -- there is no sewer system on this side of the (Ala Wai) canal," he said. The concern is about drainage, including groundwater from the range, going into the canal.

The company is working with an architect to see what can be done, the spokesman said.

Q: On June 18 I went to McDonald's in Kahala and used my McExtra card. It said I could get two apple pies for 99 cents. On June 21 I went back, but the manager said they wouldn't honor that offer. Why put that on the card if you're not going to honor it?

A: McDonald's of Kahala owner/operator Glenn Waki apologized, saying the restaurant should have honored your request.

"With a total of 75 restaurants statewide, there are fortunately only a few occasions where the computer system prints an erroneous message," he said. He believes this is what happened in your case.

"We have taken steps to ensure that this will not happen in the future," he said.

Mahalo

To Dr. John H. Payne and Dr. Jason B. Bowles, who performed surgery on me at Kaiser Hospital on May 3. They also corrected another problem in my esophagus and I am now able to swallow better.

Mahalo also to the wonderful nurses who were caring and friendly when I was in Room 106A and to Dr. John Falzarano for being there when I needed help. -- J.C.

Auwe

Police Chief Lee Donohue should stand above the HPD's Beretania Street parking exit. He would be surprised to see that many of his employees do not come to a complete stop before merging into traffic.

Since Beretania is one-way going Ewa, many of them look only in the Diamond Head direction. If there is no traffic coming, they just go straight out into the street, ignoring pedestrians coming from the Ewa direction. This is an accident waiting to happen. -- No name
