Spengler high
on Pebble Beach

Mug shot Hawaii Hall of Fame golfer Paul Spengler, who runs golf operations at famed pebble Beach, is upbeat about Arnie Palmer, Clint Eastwood, Peter Ueberroth and Richard Ferris heading a group that is buying the famed golf resort. "It's pretty exciting to have icons of sport, entertainment and business bringing in a new era," Paul said by phone Wednesday, his 60th birthday. He said the current owners had a phenomenal seven years and improved the property considerably. He feels the new owners will continue their legacy. Paul believes he is "well in place" as V.P. of golf operations for the Pebble Beach Co. He is general chairman of next year's prestigious U.S. Open, the 100th U.S. open, which will be at Pebble. Paul's daughter, Kristen, is married to Ed Kenney III, chef of the new Cafe Monsarrat here. Ed is the son of entertainer Ed Kenney and Chanel's Bev Noa, a hula queen ...

Right on the ball

After Chris Pablo was diagnosed with leukemia years ago, he was playing golf and found a ball on the course with the inscription: "Beat Leukemia." Chris had the ball in his pocket Monday when he played in the Society of Seven-Outrigger Entertainment golf tourney at Olomana, which attracted 216 players. The tourney raised funds for Francis Ruivivar's fight against leukemia. Francis is the brother of SOS leader Tony Ruivivar and the SOS performed after the tourney. Tony and SOS members Bert Sagum, Gary Bautista and Roy Guerzo played in the tourney along with many show-biz stars. Roy also contributed a roast pig for the post-tourney party. Fran Kirk had Melveen Leed, Carole Kai and Loyal Garner in a threesome. They were given plenty of space. "We started out as the Three Divas," said Loyal, "and wound up as the three Divots ... "

Laurie Breeden Callies returns home from England Thursday and will resume her Baby Face Productions photo biz, focusing on kids, according to her sis, Elaine Evans of Honolulu magazine. Laurie's husband,UH Law Prof David Callies, was on sabbatical at Cambridge for four months ...

Stripers eye Hawaii

Liz Schuck, whose late husband, Don Schuck, worked at both Pacific and European Stars and stripes newspapers, was in town this week visiting old S&S pals such as Oscar Kuwahara, Tom Scully , Tom's son, Chris, and yours truly. The Schucks' daughter, Ann "Ann-Chan" Harris, was in charge of the annual S&S reunion in Orlando, Fla., last year. Liz says there is much interest in holding the 2000 reunion here. Don was a powerful man. His claim to fame was hitting a golf ball all the way up Mount Fuji. His last shot went into the crater. "It one of the longest drives in history, sez funny Liz ... I'm going on vacation. There will be a Wood Craft next Saturday but none on July 10. Back at work July 12 ...
