Former University of Hawaii golfer Dawn Kaneshiro of Lahaina stunned defending champion Amy Spooner-Johnson with a 20th-hole victory over the Talahassee, Fla., favorite yesterday in the second round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico. Two rounds were played yesterday and two more were scheduled today, trimming the field to four for tomorrow's semifinals.
Sommerset Lovett, the lowest-scoring qualifier from Hawaii, lost her opening-round match, 1-up, to Stephanie Smoot of Pemberville, Ohio.
In other first-round matches, Kaneshiro defeated Susan Tessary of Collinsville, Ill.; Randi Sakihara of Aiea was ousted by Spooner-Johnson, 7 and 6, and Rachel Kyono of Lawai lost, 1-up, to Angela Stanford of Saginaw, Texas.
Guillermo in boxing final
Samson Guillermo of Waianae advanced to the finals of the Junior Olympic National Boxing Championship yesterday in Marquette, Mich. Guillermo, of the Waianae Boxing Club, decisioned David Martinez of Stockton, Calif., in a semifinal of the 112-pound division.Guillermo, who is the defending national and world champion, will fight for the gold tomorrow. If he wins, he will advance to the world championships in Mexico City. Guillermo's record is 31-0, with 17 KOs.
Three other isle boxers lost in the national semifinals yesterday: Dat Nguyen of Wailuku, fell to Nonito Donaire of Oakland, Calif., in the 106-pound class; Cheung Aiona of Hilo was beaten by David Lucio of Pontiac, Mich., in the 125-pound class, and Herman Marfil of Makawao, Maui, lost to Mark Anene of Brooklyn, N.Y., in the 156-pound class.
Yamaguchi, Inouye take Little People's titles
Ashley Yamaguchi of Aiea and Travis Inouye of Mililani won national age-group titles at the Pepsi Little People's Golf Championships in Quincy, Ill., yesterday.Yamaguchi shot a 36-39-75 to win the girls' 10-11 title by one stroke over Jessica Parmenter of Illinois. Kayla Morinaga of Waipahu was fourth at 41-40-81.
Inouye took the boys' 6-7 age group by one stroke with 19-18-37.
Kaira Martin of Honolulu finished third in the girls' 6-7 division with a 21-22-43.
Casey Kimura of Kaneohe was 10th in the boys' 10-11 division with a 40-41-81.

Women's football tryouts
Maui tryouts for the Hawaiian Waves women's tackle football team will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Maui High School field.Any woman 18 years or older is invited to participate. The cost is $15.
The staff of the Waves and the Hawaiian Warriors men's team will conduct the tryouts.

Four from isles in triathlon
Peter Hursty of Oahu, Jeff Sanders of Maui and Brent Imonen and Luis De La Torre of Kona will be in the field of 50 men and 35 women competing in tomorrow's ITU Big Island Triathlon World Cup at Waikoloa.Triathletes from 17 countries are entered in the qualifying event for the 2000 Olympic Games, which consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40K bike and a 10K run.
The women will start at 8:30 a.m., the men at 11:30 a.m.
Dwyer finishes fourth
Bridget Dwyer of Kailua shot a final-round 73 to finish in fourth place at the Compaq Junior Golf Championship at Trophy Lake in Port Orchard, Wash., yesterday.Dwyer's three-round total of 234 left her 12 strokes behind winner Erica Blasberg of Corona, Calif.
Lee U.S. taekwondo coach
Dae Sung Lee of Honolulu, one of the world's most talented and respected taekwondo experts for two decades, will coach the U.S. national team bidding for a berth in the 2000 Summer Olympics.Lee, 40, will join fellow coach Young-in Cheon of Los Angeles and the four-person U.S. team at the World Qualifying Championship July 9-10 in Croatia.
Taekwondo becomes an official Olympic medal sport in next year's Games at Sydney, Australia.
Hoops in Paradise
The inaugural Basketball in Paradise youth tournament, with high school-age boys and girls teams from Hawaii and the mainland, tips off at 1 p.m. today at Klum Gym and Gym No. 1 on the UH campus.The 36-team tournament, organized by the Hawaii Winter League World Baseball Foundation, runs through Sunday.
Polo at Waimanalo
The first half of the polo season at Waimanalo winds up Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. match on the Windward field.After a three-week break, polo will resume on July 25 and run through Oct, 3.
