A comprehensive compilation of statewide sports information published in a single volume, covering 59 sports, from adventure racing to wrestling. The major sports are covered at all levels, youth/ amateur, college and professional.
Each sport begins with a history of that sport in Hawaii, and provides statistics about the sport since its introduction in Hawaii.
"The Voices of Wisdom, Hawaii Elders Speak": MJ Harden, $24.95, 231 pages, Aka Press, paperback.
Histories and philosophies of Hawaiian elders who were considered experts in their disciplines. Twenty-four individuals highlight topics that keep the Hawaiian culture alive. All 24 are leaders of the cultural renaissance of the past three decades.
"The Birth and Death of the Miracle Man and Other Stories": Albert Wendt, $16.95, 176 pages, University of Hawaii Press, paperback.
A collection of stories painting a portrait of the complex world of Samoa. Salepa, down on his luck, is determined to use his talent; Fisola, who feels the Miracle Man is being born inside of him, disgraces his family by stabbing a European nun; and Gabriel relives his family's tragic past.
"Dance for the Land": Clemence Mclaren, $16.00, 153 pages, Simon & Schuster, hardcover.
A young girl thought hula was something for tourists, girls in plastic skirts who dance to silly songs. Once she realizes the effortless grace and hard work involved, she bubbles with excitement, realizing hula is a way of telling stories without words, a kind of poetry. Geared toward children ages 10-14.
