Big Man Camp
returning for
sixth year
Star-BulletinPete Newell's Big Man camp will return to Hawaii for a sixth summer and be held Aug. 16-21 at Kamehameha Schools' Kekuhaupi'o Gym.
"We're having it at Kamehameha for the second year," said Merv Lopes, Hawaii coordinator for the camp for collegians and pros. "They have a great floor there."
The camp is directed by Cleveland Cavaliers' 83-year-old scout Pete Newell, a former college coach and NBA general manager.
Lopes said pros who have signed up early include Chris Dudley (Knicks), Keon Clark (Nuggets), Raef LaFrentz (Nuggets), Ryan Stack (Cavaliers), Brad Miller (Hornets), Antawn Jamison (Warriors), Jason Caffey (Warriors) and Adonal Foyle (Warriors).
Among the collegians are Jake Voskuhl of NCAA champion Connecticut, Auburn's Mamadou N'Diaye, UCLA's Daniel Gadzuric, Florida's Donnell Harvey and Oregon State's Clifton Jones.
Jones, who went to the camp last year, is a former Kahuku High all-state player.
"Jones had a terrific season," Lopes said. "He even had a double-double against UCLA."
