Community
puts to use devices
to revive the heart

Question: What ever happened to the American Heart Association's campaign last year in recognition of its 50th anniversary to purchase defibrillators for key public areas in the community?

Answer: The defibrillators were presented last week at the association's annual meeting at the Oahu Country Club.

The Hawaii Convention Center, Bishop Museum and USS Missouri were to be equipped with automatic external defibrillators.

Sixteen also were donated by the Survivalink Corp., AED manufacturer.

A volunteer task force selected sites to receive donated defibrillators. The first went to the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center.

The Waialae Country Club and Pacific Club recently established defibrillator programs, and Oahu Circuit Court, District Court of the 1st Circuit, Trendtex Fabrics and Waima-nalo Health Center also have ordered the lifesaving devices.

Dr. William Dang Jr., association president, said the Hawaii organization last year successfully advocated for state legislation reducing the amount of training needed to operate a defibrillator.

The legislation also provides Good Samaritan liability protection to defibrillator users and their employers, the cardiologist said.
