Movers win two of three
The Hawaii Island Movers, on a baseball tour of Japan, beat Hiroshima and Shikoku all-star teams Sunday, then dropped a 3-1 decision to the Chugoku All-Stars yesterday at Hiroshima's Kaizai University stadium.The Movers rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to beat Hiroshima, 7-4, as Ben Siff pitched 5 1/2 innings of scoreless relief and Duke Sardinha drove in three runs. The Hawaii team got 7 strong innings from second-game starter Sean Yamashita in a 6-2 victory over Shikoku.
The Movers were held to five hits by three Chugoku pitchers in yesterday's loss.
Wahine on honor roll
Five University of Hawaii women recently were named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association all-academic team for the 1998-99 school year.The UH standouts are senior Dianne Vicheinrut, juniors Karin Umemura and Katie Hill, and sophomores Andrea Nishioka and Lisa De Rossi.
Crawford, Hubbert selected
Former Hawaii stars Therese Crawford and Nikki Hubbert are among 19 players named to the new United States Volleyball League's "Dream Team" that will compete and promote the game between now and the league's December 2000 debut.Each of the 19 has committed to the USVL and will be paid $30,000 for her "Dream Team" participation.
Putting for big bucks
As much as $500,000 could be won by hot-handed golfers during the putting challenge at Hawaii Golf Expo Friday through Sunday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.Sport Court is sponsoring the putting contest, which is open to all at $2, with all proceeds going to Hawaii junior golf programs. Qualifying will be with 10-foot putts on the Sport Court green. Five qualifiers will be selected by lot to putt from 10, 20, 40 and 50 feet for a grand prize of $100,000.
The Golf Expo also will feature tips from pros, exhibitors, a club and bag swap meet, golf fashion shows and free miniature golf for all ages. Admission is $5 (children under 12 free). Hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
