Isle beauty finalist in
TEEN cover search

The 1999 Great Model Search is under way and Honolulu teen Vaitiare Cahoon is among the finalists.

The winner of the contest sponsored by TEEN magazine and Maybelline will be announced Thursday.

Fourteen-year-old Cahoon, who will be a sophomore at Maryknoll High School in the fall, will compete with seven other teens from across the nation. The winner will receive $5,000 and become TEEN's October 1999 cover model.

Cahoon, who left Saturday for Los Angeles to participate in rehearsals and photo sessions, was selected on the basis of photos sent to TEEN by her mom. Magazine staffers called to request more photos and Cahoon was in.

She said she doesn't have much experience as a model, having taken only a few classes from her agent Kathy Muller.

Cahoon says whether she wins or not, she will continue to pursue a career in modeling. She will also appear in TEEN's October issue, along with the other seven finalists.

TEEN has been discovering new faces for 18 years, counting actor Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (1988), among its model search alumnus.

Other finalists are: Jaimel Abella, 16, from Louisville, Ky.; Taryn Cox, 15, Huntington Beach, Calif.; Wendy DeRoche, 14, Gainesville, Ga.; Abigail Forman, 16, Raleigh, N.C.; Mariah Hothan, 14, Cedar Creek, Texas; Sabrina Sikor, 14, Macon, Ga.; and Lilly Wu, 14, Wichita, Kan.
