bound for
junior nationals

Samson Guillermo leads an
11-member Hawaii squad

National and world champion Samson Guillermo of Waianae leads an 11-member Hawaii team into the U.S. Junior Olympic Boxing Championships starting Friday At Marquette, Mich.

Gold medalists will advance to the World Championships next month.

Guillermo, who will fight in the 112-pound class, is 28-0 with 16 knockouts. He also has a 3.5 grade point average at Waianae High School.

His teammates are Michael Adams of Maui (95 pounds), Brandy Pinol of Kalihi (100), Dat Nguyen of Wailuku (106), Cheung Aiona of Hilo (125), Bobby King of Lahaina (132), Kawena Rosario of Waianae (139), Kapena Kaopuiki of Lanai (147), Herman and Martin Marfil of Makawao (156, 165) and Hapa Koloi of Lahaina (super heavyweight).

The coaches are Bruce Kawano, Brian Franco, Samuel Guillermo and Carlos Weaver.
