Sonnenberg wins
second OCC crown

Eric Sonnenberg fired a final-round 68 to win the OCC Invitational by five strokes yesterday with a 54-hole total of 205.

It was the second title for the 40-year-old attorney, who's a member of the Oahu Country Club. Sonnenberg also won in 1988.

Mark Chun finished second at 210 after a closing round of 1-under-par 70.

Damien Jamila, who trailed Sonnenberg by one stroke after 36 holes Friday, had a triple-bogey 7 on his first hole, the par-4 10th, and finished in a three-way tie at 212 with Jarrod Mizusawa and Shane Hoshino, whose 67 was the day's best round..

Montoya tops CART standings

Juan Montoya, who drives for the Target/Chip Ganassi auto racing team, is the leader through yesterday in CART's "Points to Paradise" chase for starting spots in the Hawaiian Super Prix.

The top 12 drivers in the final CART Championship Series point standings will receive automatic slots in the Hawaii Super Prix, to be held Nov. 11-12 at Kalaeloa Airport, Barbers Point.

With 13 races left in the CART season, Montoya has 73 points. Dario Franchitti of Team KOOL Green is just two points off the pace, Greg Moore of Player's Forsythe Racing is third with 69, and Newman/Haas Racing teammates Michael Andretti and Christian Fittipaldi share fifth with 61.

Completing the top 12 are Adrian Fernandez (53), Gil de Ferran (50), Paul Tracy and Max Papis (36), Jimmy Vassar (33), P.J. Jones (28) and Tony Kanaan (26).

Konishiki Kids golf

The Konishiki Kids Foundation golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday, June 24, at the Pearl City Country Club.

The three-person scramble has a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Handicap maximums are 24 for men, 36 for wome and 60 for teams.

The cost is $150 per golfer.

Run for Rain Forest

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii's sixth annual Run for the Rain Forest 5K is scheduled for Sunday, June 27, over a course that begins and ends at the Manoa Recreation Center. The starting time is 7:30 a.m.

The entry fee is $22. Applications are available at all Oahu 7-Eleven, most sporting goods stores and in the May/June issue of Hawaii Race Magazine. They're also available by calling 537-4508 or on the Internet at http://www.tnc.org/hawaii.

Maglangit drag-race standout

Alfred Maglangit of Waipahu won the featured Super Comp event in his Chevy-powered dragster Saturday night at Hawaii Raceway Park.
