NEW YORK -- The New York Mets lost Benny Agbayani to a freakish injury in batting practice yesterday.

A ball hit by Agbayani, the Mets' budding folk hero, ricocheted off the corner of the batting cage during batting practice and bounced back into Agbayani's face, leaving him with considerable swelling under his right eye.

General manager Steve Phillips said X-rays were negative and showed only a contusion. Agbayani, who played his collegiate ball at Hawaii Pacific University, listed as is day-to-day.

"This is good news," Phillips said. "He has no blurred vision. There is a little swelling on the bottom part of his eye."

Agbayani, who was hitting .409 with eight homers and 15 RBIs in 66 at-bats, will undergo a CT scan today to make sure there is no fracture.
