Carey IPFL Offensive
Player of Week

Hawaii Hammerheads quarterback Tim Carey, who completed 16 of 20 passes for 134 yards in a 37-18 victory over Rocky Mountain last Friday, was named the Indoor Professional Football League's Offensive Player of the Week.

The former UH quarterback also leads the league in passing efficiency.

Sutton surfing giant-killer

Shawn Sutton, who entered the Quiksilver Pro Fiji surf meet as a replacement for Kaipo Jaquias, pulled off his second big upset today in the third round.

Sutton eliminated Shane Dorian, another Hawaii pro who is ranked No. 2 in the world. In Round 2, Sutton beat world No. 3 Daniel Wills of Australia.

Kalani Robb of Hawaii also advanced today but Hawaii's Sunny Garcia was ousted by defending world champ Kelly Slater. Ross Williams and Conan Hayes of Hawaii also were eliminated.

Kaaua wins golf playoff

Jaime-Blue Kaaua defeated Jay Taise in a sudden-death playoff to win the top prize of $750 in Monday's Pro Tour Hawaii golf tournament at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Beach Course on the Big Island. Kaaua and Taise each shot 73 in regulation play.

Open water swim meet

John Flanagan, Rick Heltzell and Kim Mellon of Hawaii are among 28 elite American men and women swimmers scheduled to race Saturday in the USA National Open Water 25K from Hawaii Kai to Waikiki.

The top two men and women finishers will represent the U.S. in the Pan Pacific Championship in Australia. The third- and fourth-place finishers will swim in the November Pre-World Championship in Hawaii.
