Three auto theft suspects were arrested last night after they allegedly attempted to run over a police officer in Waikiki.

Two men and a woman were in a stolen rental car on Paki Avenue at 5:23 p.m., police said.

When an officer in a Cushman-type vehicle attempted to stop them near the Waikiki fire station, the stolen car accelerated toward him.

The officer, 36, fired twice.

Witnesses said people playing basketball and volleyball at the nearby Paki Park scattered when hearing the gunshots.

The suspects drove away on Ala Wai Boulevard and crashed the white sedan into a curb on Walina Street fronting the Fairway Villa condominiums.

The woman and a man were arrested near the damaged car. A third suspect ran into the Aloha Surf Hotel at 444 Kanekapolei St.

Dozens of officers, with their guns drawn, ran around and surrounded the area, said Andrew Tung, who watched the action from his lanai.

A 35-year-old Aiea Heights woman, a 30-year-old Moanalua Valley man and a 31-year-old Salt Lake man were all booked for first-degree attempted murder and auto theft.
