75-mile Maui-Oahu race
draws fleet of 15 canoes

Some 15 sailing canoes are expected to participate in tomorrow's 11th Ho'omanau Race, a 75-mile event from Maui to Oahu.

The race starts at 9 a.m. off Whalers Village in Kaanapali, Maui. The finish is off Waikiki Beach, fronting the Moana Hotel.

The first canoe is expected to arrive between 2 and 3 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow at Duke's Canoe Club.

Wahine sailors eighth

The Hawaii Wahine sailing team finished eighth in the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association's Women's Collegiate Dinghy Nationals yesterday at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Sailing for UH were skippers Molly O'Bryan and Laura Rehg and crew Natalia Tangalin and Ursula Austin.

Tufts won the three-day event with a low score of 126, 14 ahead of runner-up Dartmouth. Hawaii had a 236.

Williams, Dorian advance

Ross Williams and Shane Dorian of Hawaii won their first-round heats in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Quiksilver Pro Fiji meet today.

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia and Shawn Sutton each finished second in his three-man heat and must win Round 2 elimination heats to join Williams and Dorian in Round 3.

Three other isle pros - Andy Irons, Kalani Robb and Conan Hayes - were to surf their first-round heats later today.

Wilson nine shots back

Kaneohe's Dean Wilson shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday for a 36-hole total of 141, nine strokes behind leader Felix Casas, in the Philippine Open golf tournament at Manila.

Wahine football tryouts

Tryouts for Hawaii's first all-women's football team will be held at 7 p.m., June 1, at Aiea District Park, with women 19 years old and older invited to participate.

Players and coaches from the Hawaiian Warriors men's semipro team will conduct the tryouts.

The candidates will be timed in the 40-yard dash, the short shuffle, the square drill 90-pound bench press and several position drills. They are asked to wear T-shirts, shorts and grass cleats.

Sacred Hearts seeks coach

Sacred Hearts Academy is accepting applications from qualified individuals interested in coaching the girls' varsity basketball team.

Byron Cheng, the Lancers' head coach and basketball coordinator for the past three seasons, has resigned to pursue other opportunities.

Smith, Kamanao selected

Parker Smith, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Honolulu, and Kanoe Kamanao, a 5-7 hitter for Asics Rainbow Volleyball Club, have been selected by USA Volleyball to train this summer.

Smith, a junior at Punahou School, was named to the Boys' Youth National Team that will train at Lake Placid, N.Y., and compete at the national team championships in Montreal and the Three Nations Youth National Competition against Canada and France.

Kamanao was named to the roster of the High Performance Camp, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Iolani School eighth grader is the only Hawaii player among the 23 selected to the 12-15 year-old team following tryouts earlier this month.

Lum, Turney silver medalists

Hawaii's Mahealani Lum and Christina Turney, members of the U.S. Canoe & Kayak National B Team, teamed to earn two silver medals at the Miyosha Cup International women's kayak competition in Nagoya, Japan.

Lum, a 1997 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, and Turney, a 1997 graduate of Punahou, placed second in the 200-meter K-2 race. The Hawaii pair, along with Sunrisa Reed and Katie Hagler, also finished second in the 500-meter K-4 event.
